Moving from Joomla to WordPress

July 25th, 2007 · 10 Comments

I’ve just moved most of my website content from the Joomla! content management system to the Word Press blogging platform. Both are Open Source projects, which I think is the main reason the migration was so painless.

All said it took an afternoon, but I am really impressed by how easy the migration has been, thanks largely to these six steps at rangit.com.

Additionally, when I needed to clean up my MySQL database, instructions on how to execute a find and replace in PHPmyAdmin came to the rescue – thanks to Chingali.

So I got all the coaching I needed to make the move myself – thanks to a couple of bloggers I’ll probably never meet. That’s the power of an open web.

The move will mean one big change – comments are now welcome across blog posts. Enjoy!

Great! I’ve been seeking this information because I also want to migrate one of my sites from Joomla to WP.

    Thanks for sharing the links.

    Hi there, Tim
I intend to migrate to WordPress from Joomla! 1.5. I’ve been googling up and down for hours and still I didn’t find any piece of information on this issue. Rather, I found an article on how to migrate from Joomla! 1.0 to WordPress. I’m just afraid my posts and articles will be lost during migration…

    Hi Rizky,

The information I posted was relevant at the time… I don’t know how much the database structure of Joomla changed between 1.0 and 1.5… You can have a go at using the instructions I’ve used and see how that works – as long as you make backups of all databases and files there’s nothing lost!

    Good luck,

    Tim

    Hey there,

I found those six steps long back and have successfully been able to migrate all my articles from Joomla! to WordPress. The only problem I’m facing is that there’s no way I can migrate all my Joomla! users into my WordPress.

    Any suggestions?

Hmm, I’d prefer spend $35 to get it done, I’ve just found gConverter, this is global converter for all CMS’s, all Jooma component can be converted to WordPress, sections, categories, articles with video, mp3, flicker, Users with all users data, user’s permissions, even tags and comments from all Joomla custom plugins, More info http://gconverter.com/joomla-to-wordpress/ about all components of this conversion.

That’s the beauty of CMS, you don’t need to be a techie to do it yourself. ,For me, nothing beats WordPress as CMS, truly user friendly with a lot of features to play around.
