Evolution of the surfboard

March 8th, 2008 · No Comments

Evolution of the Surfboard I was talking to my grandfather, Vince Mulcahy, today and he’s been telling stories of life before, during and after WW2. He pulled out a book, Surf – Australians against the sea, which is a history of Australia’s early surf culture. Published in 1949, the book features a photo to show the ‘evolution of the surfboard’ – of the three surfboards in the photo, the first and third were built by Vince. The board in the middle, from Vince’s memory, was built by Roy Arkins, another member of the Maroubra Surf Club.
