Get your face all over the internet in less than 3 minutes

July 29th, 2008 · 2 Comments

Have you noticed that on this blog (and an increasing number of blogs) commenter’s photos (sometimes known as “avatars” are appearing alongside their posts?

Here’s an example I chose at random. It just happens to be particularly enthusiastic about a recent blog post on this site:

See Wade’s face there? Well, that happened because Wade uploaded his photo to gravatar.com and now whenever he posts at a gravatar-supported blog (like this one) readers get to see Wade’s photo.

Here’s how Gravatars are explained on the site:

“A gravatar, or globally recognized avatar, is quite simply an avatar image that follows you from weblog to weblog appearing beside your name when you comment on gravatar enabled sites. Avatars help identify your posts on web forums, so why not on weblogs?”

It takes less than three minutes to get one and if you comment widely, your face will be all over the internet (and on this blog if you ever post here).

    Hey Tim,

Thanks(?) for picking my Gravatar. It’s pretty cool having a centralised service for this function/feature too.

Thanks also for writing this post on Gravatars, they are very powerful IMO, ad it’s something I’ve been meaning to post about for quite a while. Thanks for doing such a great job.

    Peace,
    –Wade

Thanks for tip Tim – glad I’ve got you to keep me up to date with what’s out there that I should be doing.

Keep on keeping on in Beijing. Make sure your taxi drivers use the meter, otherwise they’ll charge you through the nose. And always get a receipt – I left my mobile in a taxi in Beijing, no receipt of course, and never saw it again.
