Australia 2020 Summit – Interview with Larissa Brown

Larissa Brown’s work helps young people make their communities more sustainable. She was buzzing when I caught up with her just as the summit was concluding – “I had conversations with the Ministor for Youth, the Minister for Environment, the Ministor for Climate Change and even the Prime Minister – it was great to see democracy in action.”

Australia 2020 Summit – Interview with Dimity Fifer and Professor Tim Lindsay

Dimity Fifer works with Australian Volunteers International and Tim Lindsay is from the University of Melbourne’s Asian Law Centre.

Dimity would have liked to see some cross-stream interaction; Professor Lindsay thought the tight timings forced some good results “a cutoff point to force us into consensus” and generally worked well.

Australia 2020 Summit – Interview with Mary Nenke and Naomi Godden

Mary and Naomi participated in the “Regional Australia” stream. Mary was concerned that the final suggestions for her stream didn’t reflect a group consensus, with Naomi agreeing “the highjacking of (this stream) by agriculture” took the focus away from big ideas she was championing.

Australia 2020 Summit – Interview with Joel Edgerton

Actor Joel Edgerton enjoyed the process, but has ideas for how he’d like to see the weekend process refined – instead of starting in groups of ten, perhaps five would have worked better. He also felt that in his stream some people found it difficult to let go of the agenda item they’d brought to the conference. He also suggested a third day of “throwing all the cards in the air” and mixing the participants from other streams would be great.

Australia 2020 Summit – Interview with Dr Wendell John Rosevear

Dr Wendell Rosevear has worked in prisons since 1975. He runs a drug recovery group. He sees the “restoration of valuing ourselves and valuing each other as a prevention”. He sees many overdose deaths from heroin as preventable, and believes a government-administered heroin provision program as part of the solution. Instead of saying people who use drugs are bad, Dr Rosevear argues, we need to start saying people who use drugs are valuable. “Maybe they don’t realise it, but if we can make them feel that …then maybe we’d have a better strategy.”

I was hoping to ask Dr Rosevear about his take on the summit process, but as you will hear, we had little time and he had a lot of ideas he wanted to express…
